Autodesk Civil 3D Case Study: Sligo County Council

Sligo County Council replaced Bentley MX Road and Autodesk Civil 3D with Autodesk InfraWorks, MAP 3D, Civil 3D, and BIM 360 Docs for road design, achieving faster turnaround on preliminary proposals, minimizing rework, and enabling cloud collaboration. The use of Autodesk solutions allowed for the creation of multiple route options in InfraWorks in less time compared to MX Road or Civil 3D, while BIM 360 Docs facilitated efficient documentation sharing and reduced project risks. Diatec and Autodesk's comprehensive workflow solution, including integration with non-Autodesk applications, provided significant value to the customer.

Customer Challenge

Sligo County Council was using Bentley MX Road and (to lesser extent) Autodesk Civil 3D for road design. By demonstrating the enhanced workflow using Autodesk InfraWorks for preliminary design plus MAP 3D, Civil 3D and cloud collaboration through BIM360 Docs, the team at Sligo County Council went with the Autodesk solution.

Project Goals

1. Fast turnaround on multiple preliminary design proposals, which would also be visually self-explanatory to the public for consultation.
2. Minimise rework from preferred preliminary route design to detail design.
3. Cloud collaborative managed and quality controlled space for all stakeholders.

Solution

The following solutions and services were deployed:
1. Autodesk InfraWorks for preliminary design, Map 3D for GIS interoperability with ARCGIS, Civil 3D for detail design, and BIM 360 Docs for CDE.

2. Discovery workshop to confirm workflows and priorities, resources and skillsets.

3. Demonstration of recommend Autodesk solution.

4. Provision and setup of software, CDE onboarding, application and workflow training.

5. Ongoing maintenance, technical support and remote training.


Business Outcome

Sligo County Council was able to create multiple route options in Autodesk InfraWorks in a fraction of the time it would have taken using either MX Road or Civil 3D. They were able to assess many more options than would have been feasible using alternative applications. Autodesk BIM 360 Docs allowed tight control of documentation sharing and greatly reduced errors, repeat communication, delays, and thereby reduced overall project risk.

Conclusion

The ability of Diatec and Autodesk to present, provide and support an entire workflow solution including integration with non-Autodesk applications was a significant value add for the customer.
